What Side Effects Can be Expected Following LASIK Surgery?

Visual impairment is experienced by a great number of our patients at Sather Eye Clinic and Optical. While there are many corrective lens options, such as glasses and contact lenses, for our patients to choose from, many are seeking a more permanent solution. A large percent of our patients dream of reducing dependency on corrective lenses by correcting vision impairment through laser eye surgery. LASIK surgery reshapes the cornea so that light refracts properly within the eye, improving vision for those who suffer from hyperopia, myopia, or astigmatism. While Dr. Thomas Sather does not perform LASIK surgery, he can guide his patients through the process, screening for candidacy, referring patients to a skilled laser eye surgeon, and working with them through recovery, during which time our Bozeman patients will experience LASIK side effects.

WHAT ARE COMMON LASIK SIDE EFFECTS?

LASIK surgery is a very safe and quick procedure. Still, as is typical with any surgical procedure, patients will experience some side effects while they recover from LASIK. Fortunately, these side effects are usually mild symptoms are short-lived. Some of the most common side effects of LASIK surgery include the following:

Burning, itching sensation: The eyes are likely to be itchy after LASIK surgery and patients may experience a slight burning sensation. Despite the temptation, it is very important that patients do not scratch or rub their eyes. Instead, lubricating eye drops should be used to moisten the eyes and relieve itching. Pain medication can also be used as directed to manage any discomfort.

Sensitivity to light: Following LASIK surgery, the eyes will have heightened sensitivity. It will be best to avoid bright lights or direct sunlight. Dark sunglasses should be worn to protect the eyes while they are sensitive.

Glares or halos: Glares and halos are also common following LASIK surgery. Patients are likely to see streaks or halos surrounding sources of light. This is most likely to be a problem at night, so patients should avoid night driving until this condition has resolved itself.

Dry eyes: The most common side effect of LASIK surgery is dry eyes. The eyes will lack moisture, which also accounts for some of the other LASIK side effects. It is very important to keep the eyes moist in order to avoid the itching, burning, and discomfort that is associated with dry eyes. Dry eyes is also one of the longest lasting LASIK side effects and may persist for several months after surgery.

While these LASIK side effects may be a source of mild discomfort, they are normal effects of surgery and should not be a cause for concern. Dr. Sather will help patients throughout LASIK recovery to ensure that these side effects remain manageable and that surgical complications do not develop.
